As a Franco-Ontarian I find I live in-between. While most of my creative expression is in English, a significant part of my identity derives from being a Francophone. Québecois' identify me as an anglophone but in Ontario I identify first as French Canadian. I sympathize with the strong desire to protect the French language (within reason), but being bilingual, I don't really feel linguistically alienated. My mother ensured all four of us learned French even though we grew up in an English city. Two of us decided to make our home in Québec.The two solitudes divide present in The Hockey Sweater speaks to how we can feel cut off from who we are or where home is, and how it can start from a language difference.

What We Choose to Remember features a cast of more than 30 characters, whose families arrived in successive waves of immigration. The oldest families arrived during the period of ‘two solitudes’ when Montreal’s population was more than 50% English. They share firsthand accounts decades of political upheaval. The most recent immigrants arrived believing linguistic conflicts were ancient history.

Our story takes place on the Indigenous lands of the Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk) nation of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. Tiotià:ke (known as Montréal) has existed as a meeting place of many First Nation peoples, including but not limited to the Abenaki , Anishinaabeg (Algonquin), and the Huron-Wendat.
